First serial produced electric (refuse collection) truck for Renewi
Renewi, an international waste-to-product company, is the first organisation in the world to order a full electric Volvo truck. This Volvo FE Electric 6×2 with electric driven body and tailgate from Dutch RCV specialist Geesinknorba will be used for the collection of commercial waste in urban areas. Actively reducing emissions, making the fleet more sustainable and providing specific contribution to a better environment are the most important reasons for Renewi to invest in this electric refuse collection vehicle (RCV).
The Volvo FE electric for Renewi has a GVW of 27 tons, making it the heaviest electrical OEM serial produced vehicle. The chassis will be delivered in spring 2020, Geesinknorba will place an energy efficient 20m3 Geesink GPMIV with GEC lifter so the RCV is expected on the Dutch roads early summer.
Renewi`s Volvo FE electric will be used to collect waste in urban areas. The vehicle carries 4 lithium-ion battery packs of 50kW each. These batteries will also charge during braking making the vehicle very suitable for stop-and-go action. Charging will happen overnight using 400V AC chargers with 22kW, or DC fast charging to max 150kW, the well-known CCS/Combo2- connection will be used.
Contributing to a circular economy
Being a leading waste-to-product company, Renewi is enabling a second life for used materials each day. About 90% of all waste produced by Renewi is given a second live as new material or energy, hence saving a considerable amount of CO2 emission. The investment of this electric RCV that will allow Renewi to reduce emissions and enabling a more sustainable fleet, is no surprise.
“On a sustainable way from waste to product, starts with sustainable collection. Waste collection will transform in the coming years driven by the urgency to reduce CO2 even further. Renewi contributes to this transformation as leader by adding modern Euro6-trucks to its fleet. We are excited to partner with Volvo Trucks and becoming the first organisation in the world using a full electric serial produced RCV. We are determined to lead the sustainable waste collection as well as reusing materials in secondary materials, furthermore we want to be an important player by introducing zero emission vehicles.”, says Meinderdjan Botman, Managing Director Commercial Waste Netherlands.
In order to use the batteries as efficient as possible, Volvo Trucks supports Renewi in a complete system. Wijnand van den Brink, Manager Special Products & Innovation at Volvo Trucks Nederland explains: “It is a challenge to maximise the load capacity while optimising driving range at the same time. Electric driving asks for a different way of working. To prevent transporters choosing too much battery capacity, which limits the loading capacity, we offer support for the best usage and optimal charging of batteries.”
Volvo Trucks uses special software considering routes, number of stops and weights. The system displays route implications, energy consumption per kilometer, remaining battery capacity, average transport speed and route duration.
Volvo FE Electric
Besides the Volvo FE Electric the sales of the lighter version Volvo FL electric has started. “With these electrical vehicles transporters can improve air quality and contribute to lower noise and event help prevent traffic jams in rush hour. Operations can take place without noise and exhaust emissions in the early morning or late evening. Besides being silent these units are vibration free. This offers benefits to drivers and loaders in terms of comfort, according to Wijnand van den Brink.
